Spotlight Family: Nyota Salima Family
Country: Democratic Republic of the Congo
Nyota was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She was often in unsafe areas growing up as her country has been at war and suffered instability since 1996. An estimated 6 million people have died in the ongoing war. She moved many times until she finally arrived in Tanzania. When she arrived, she had no education and no way to support herself or her family. She struggled to get medication or food. She married in Tanzania and then eventually interviewed with the UN. She worked with the International Organization for Migration and was granted refugee status to the United States.
She and her children were given a loan to help them fly to America where she was assigned to live in Idaho. The International Rescue Committee has been helping her transition to her new home. Now she works at B&D foods supporting her children and paying back her loan to travel to America. Her husband remains in Tanzania waiting for his refugee status and enough money to travel to be with them. She now has an opportunity to work in safe place allowing her to provide food for her family. She never experienced that before in all of her life.
Nyota has three young children Salima (6), Mwajuma (3) and Alombwe (2). She expresses her gratitude for all who have welcomed her family to Idaho. She is so grateful to Dr. Haymore’s office for assisting with the application, especially using a Swahili interpreter so she could understand the process and paperwork. “I hope they can continue to help other families.
